Good Painting is not Always a Good Painting
What makes a good painting? Familiar as the question may be, it resists a ready answer. Beauty, remarkable technical skill, art-historical significance, and engagement with the concerns of our time each offer a possible criterion, yet none alone can fully account for a work’s value. WonGi Sul’s solo exhibition, A Good Painting Is Not Necessarily a Good Painting, revisits these familiar yet elusive standards of judgment to ask what makes a painting meaningful.
This inquiry begins with the artist’s own experience. As a young art student aspiring to become a painter, Sul found Picasso’s Les Demoiselles d’Avignon difficult to embrace. Accepting an explanation of its art-historical importance was one thing; finding beauty in the painting was another. The distance between its standing as a masterpiece and his own response to the work left him with an enduring question about the criteria by which we judge a painting.
Through this question, Sul reflects on the relationship between the visual experience of a work and the language surrounding it. Concepts and theories can deepen our understanding, yet they can also determine a painting’s value before we have had a chance to look. As novelty, originality, art-historical significance, and the social importance of a subject take precedence, what we actually see and feel in front of a painting can recede from view. Any subject can give rise to compelling work, but the importance of a subject does not in itself ensure artistic achievement.

What, then, makes a painting meaningful beyond its being good? For Sul, two qualities matter: the capacity to broaden our aesthetic understanding and the ability to deepen our understanding of human experience through self-reflection. Neither emerges simply from inventing a new form or telling a personal story. They take shape through questioning familiar modes of expression, looking repeatedly at the world one inhabits, and translating that experience into a visual language of one’s own.
Sul finds this commitment in the work of Philip Guston(1913-1980) and Antonio López García(1936-). Despite their distinct approaches to painting, both offer him examples of artists who expanded the possibilities of expression through sustained attention to their lives and surroundings. An ordinary studio, an everyday object, or a familiar landscape becomes a reflection of inner life as the artist’s sensibility and accumulated experience enter the image. Meaning arises less from the exceptional nature of the subject than from the process of observing and depicting it.
These reflections lead to Sul’s aspirations for his own practice. One is that an enduring curiosity about the world will keep his work open to change. The other is that, across its differences, his work will continue to reveal a consistent sense of his life and perspective. Just as Van Gogh’s self-portraits capture the changing reality of a single person, Sul hopes that something of himself will persist across paintings that continually take different forms. This continuity within difference develops through an ongoing examination of his own perceptions and judgments.
The title A Good Painting Is Not Necessarily a Good Painting expresses a reluctance to settle the question of value too quickly. The exhibition invites viewers to reconsider their own criteria: What do we regard as a good painting, and which paintings expand our experience and understanding? Leaving these questions open, Sul’s work invites us to look, feel, and reflect.
