Snowy Night

Oct 10 – Nov 7, 2014

Lee Eugean Gallery presents a solo exhibition by painter Manna Lee from October 10th, 2014 through November 7th, 2014. Titled "Snowy Night", his 8th solo show took two years of making since the last solo show at Youngeun Museum. In varying sizes of 12 canvases, including a large painting 4m wide worked over half a year, mostly portray snowy nightscapes.

From 2011 through the summer of 2013, the artists have participated in Youngeun Museum's Residency program. While planning for the show in the remotely located studio surrounded by nature, the artist experienced isolation by heavy snow. Facing the landscape at dawn, emerged an unfamiliar sight. All of its boundaries lost, the once familiar landscape was reinvented wrapped in layers of snow. Light seemed to flicker from street lamp far away, the artist recalls the moment being 'elegant and alarming' at the same time. On a possessive impulse to walk into the 'tone' made of snow, the artist wandered around the museum while being pelted by snow.

The moment seems to exist in a dream. A dream as a metaphor for my reality. Anxious not being able to see an inch away, blocked by semi-translucent walls that follow me in all directions, stepping out and not knowing what is waiting beyond, and only able to distinguish within a current radius……. Entering by chasing the light finally reveals a snow covered forest under the streetlamp. In this landscape, the world seemed to begin from that light.

Manna Lee's work always starts from an 'accidental encounter'. However the subjects are far from a dramatic sight or distinctiveness. Such as a fenced wall, tree, or a building they are all part of the common landscape, rather easily encountered in everyday life. The artist finds 'strange resonance' within this ordinary landscape for some unclear reasons. As mentioned in the artist's previous show, this is best described through Albert Camus's absurdism. Beyond boundaries between literature and art, Camus's insight of the universe returning to itself free from previously attached meanings when we lose our generalized perception, connects to the invisible dimension in which artists sense with their sharp senses.

The title of this exhibition 'Snowy Night'is not only a physical representation of 'snowed night', but also describe a 'special night' that differs from ordinary ones. Often appearing in Manna Lee's previous work, the night landscape is described with added drama with the special effect of 'snow'.Contours and forms that were once clear during the day become barley distinguishable in the faint light of the night, while the boundaries between geographic features are removed in the circumstances of the white snow, allowing more precise articulation of surreal universe the artist wishes to capture. Manna Lee's well discussed unique color palette and deep tone truly proves itself in the recent nightscape series. Through time and labor the artist obsessively captures delicate details in describing otherwise hard to reveal the colors of the night, drawing its mysterious air onto the surface.
