The ocean, his main subject, merges into the sky, embraces the earth, and keeps breathing and changing. In the serene panoramic view of the west sea, sky and ocean often become indistinguishable and the shapes of mudflats, in black and white and strong in material details, cast a solemn dignity.

The spaces of the photographs contain the now-vanished landscapes, nowhere to be seen due to reclamation operations that transformed those mudflats and ocean with long and rich history into land. The oceans dissolve into distance. Seen from afar, they seem to be left only with an immense nature and a suspended time, often without a hint of any distinguishable form. The landscape exists as an abstraction, with the geographical place turning into a feeling of color. The landscapes deprived of shapes may lead the views to contemplate an infinite grandeur, an image going beyond images.

“Waves of clear water are filled with light of life. Cloud of sky dance along with wind. Birds fly high and fish soar into the air. Mudflats, soft and tender, unfold endlessly. The ocean, however, is a perfection, transcending time and space.”

Choi was born and raised in Yungkwang in Chollanamdo. To him, the ocean and the mudflats of the west coast are a reservoir of childhood memories and a mother’s womb arousing a homing instinct. Human greed might have dried up mudflats and killed the lives hidden inside them. The artist, however, chooses to convey a message in a paradoxical way that summons them as perfect as they used to be, rather than to express anger. He calmly captures through a series of photograph works the nature’s grandeur and human lives, and the truth photographs try to communicate in modern art
