After introducing abstract expressionism works influenced by early Informel style, Kim went to America in 1963 where he encountered works of color-plane abstraction and dipped into the mainstream modernist art of those days. Returning home after 30 years of absence, he began releasing a series of works titled Nonorientable, an attempt to express his identity-related agony, which he had suffered as an etranger in America, through works filled with traditional five colors of Korea known as Obangsaek. Since 1997, Kim has produced works showing playfulness of geometric forms using primary colors, passing through several stages of dynamic change leading ultimately to his geometric world of works: the Window series (1997~2004) was expressed in modified canvas and three dimensional modeling crossing the frontier between painting and sculpture; the Dancing Box series (2005~2009) revealed an illusory sense of space using material that allows the penetration of light; and the present Accumulation series (2007~ 2017) recorded daily life employing many boxes as its main motif. He’s never deflected into Monochrome, the gigantic mainstream which dominated Korean art world since 1970s and kept his unique art world, digging only into the fundamentals of geometric forms.

The organic abstraction and the illusory three-dimensionality which, as an important language, go through his art world have been revealed in an excellent way throughout the Dancing Box series which began during the mid-2000s. He spreads this way or that those boxes thrown away as useless, newly clothes them in color, casts them in bronze and finally resurrects them as drawings, paintings, and sculptures. Junk boxes are breathed into a new life personified as a dancing organism. The application of paint on both sides of the light-penetrating plexiglass evokes an illusory effect of a subdued sense of depth and spatiality emanating from semitransparent materials. The box on plexiglass, though a square on the plane, looks like a three dimensional object ready to fly off dancing lively.

Coming to Accumulation series, Kim takes as the main motif those boxes delivered home or purchased for personal use in his everyday life. The techniques for using plexiglass and boxes as material has been more sophisticated than in Dancing Box series. Sometimes the boxes are piled up like monuments, sometimes float freely around in various forms and even reproduce the texts written on the surface. They project the stream of consciousness of the artist who records his ordinary life through ordinary objects and then looks back life again through his works. Kim, in his works, has sought three-dimensionality rather than two dimensional paintings almost throughout his whole life. He always anguishes at borderlines between painting and sculpture and between figuration and non-figuration and yearns for freedom from any stereotypes whether in the forms of windows or square boxes.

Kim Bongtae is still active in building up his unique system of philosophy of formative art in which the border between paintings and sculptures looks like non-existent.

Kim Bongtae, as a founding member, joined in ‘Artists Association in 1960’ and ‘Actuel’ both of which were leading groups of Informel art movement of the 1960s. He also participated in the 1963 Paris Biennale. He was invited to a symposium organized by ‘International Plastic Art Association’ in New York, and taking this opportunity, decided to attend a graduate school in L.A. He was actively engaged as an artist here and there in California for the next 30 years. He returned to Korea in the late 1980s and has settled as a college professor and a full-time artist energetically producing works until now. In 2016, Kim was selected as one of the major senior artists in Korean art history and had a major retrospective exhibition, ‘Contemporary Korean Artists Series: Kim Bongtae’ at National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea.
